French Geographic Reference System: Communes, Urban Units, Urban Areas, Départements, Académies, Régions

This dataset provides the various levels of geographic aggregates associated with French communes (as of January 1, 2023). It includes the historical record of communes since 1943.


Fields suffixed with _CODE correspond to official geographic identifiers without a prefix. The values of fields suffixed with _ID include a prefix to indicate the associated geographic level:

R: Régions

A: Académies (educational authorities)

D: Départements

C: Communes

FD: Detailed France

FR: Grouped France

FE: Entire France

ZE: Employment zones (2020)

UU: Urban units (2020)

CR: Rural communes

AU: Urban areas

UUCR: Urban units and rural communes (2020)

AUC: Urban areas and communes
